more au world blather. there will be a plethora of cities/countries eventually, but we’re focusing on the core city for now, where majority of the characters will be situated at. also taking the liberty of saying trolls can’t handle the alternian sun, but are perfectly ok with earth sun. yeah.

i’ll keep adding to this once i prune the original draft down so it’s not just tl;dr crap alsfkjsf.

One of The Imperial City’s most defining characteristic is the multi-leveled format of the city itself. The way it’s structured acts as a physical segregation between the upper, middle, and lower social classes. Three separate districts (each district is made up of many subfloors) for three separate classes. Since there isn’t a specific number of floors that belong to each district, how one knows what district they’re at is by the bridges that often connect the gaps of the tall buildings together. The more ornate and more lavish they are, the higher the district. There are gates at both ends of every bridge, but they appear to be a recent addition, not quite as aged as the structures they adorn.

The Imperial City’s main architectural influences are European with a touch of Alternian, with the latter betraying which areas house a bigger portion of the troll population. The city has an intricate network of roads and sidestreets that often make it appear structurally crowded and disorganized (it would be so easy to get lost in here for hours on end), but there is a method to this madness - that is, the closeness served as an excuse for the people to isolate themselves even more according to their social classes, as if there’s something rotten about mingling with someone who isn’t from the same rank. Ever since the Sufferer’s Movement, however, with trolls and humans alike slowly warming up to each other, the closer proximities lead to higher levels of intimacy and all.

[UPPER DISTRICT] Through the looking glass, the people of society’s highest rungs silently look down upon breathtaking views composed of a myriad of picturesque, patchwork houses and lanes all heaped together underneath the weight of their arrogance and ignorance. Out of all the districts, the upper ones are probably the least concentrated, since most highblooded trolls prefer to live in isolation since a lot of them still upheld the belief that humans were, quite frankly, beneath them. It’s a wonder that anybody stops to admire the view amongst all their social gatherings and backstabbing. To anybody casting an eye on the towers, nothing seems out of the ordinary, though inside, it’s a different story altogether.

Seadwellers get their own section here, because with the industrial revolution underway, pollution in the bodies of water was a common thing. There are a few floors dedicated to them alone, and just think of it as a blown-up version of an aquarium - that’s pretty much what it is anyway. It’s also just another way to showcase the fact that the hemospectrum is still in place, since only the seadwellers have the cleanest water.

[MIDDLE DISTRICT] Seemingly styled in a more laid back fashion, an aura of contentedness saturates the middle class level. Weaving through these hemmed in zones reveals houses built atop shops, stacked as close as possible together to provide a foundation for the richer folk above. One gets the feeling that all the people located here are tied together in close knit groups. Men carry crates and wares, easily piling them behind windows before returning to fetch more, while women cling to infants and go about their daily rituals of chores, cooking and washing. Friends drop by, all smiles and stories to tell. Children nimbly scamper along rooftops, beams and walls, seemingly unaware of the danger of falling - when you’re as carefree as they are, why would you be? Not everything is as it seems, but you’ll believe otherwise so long as you drink in the atmosphere, sights, scents and sounds.

The market in the midst of all this is seemingly endless, as there are more wares than one would bother to list. Why list when you can imagine? If you can think of it, you’ll bound to find it here, whether it’s an out of print book, exotic spices, bitter potions, rusted antiques, clear crystal and polished glass sculptures that feel warm to the touch as if they’re cooled just the right temperature to examine - there’s even the odd bit of technology if you look hard enough. Other businesses exist, but the main attraction is the market, where the rick folk often send their maids to shop for them and the poor peddle their wares wherever they can.

[HISTORY STUFF]

Imagine this: a world where trolls and humans have coexisted, breathed the same air, and shared the same earth. This is all thanks to the fact that the Alternian Empire invaded the planet centuries ago, spreaded its influence until mankind had no choice but to yield.

There were many decades of unrest, because it wasn’t like humanity to just take this lying down. No. As they always had, they fought for the freedom they deserved, or even for the slightest sliver of a chance of getting it back.

Many attempts were unsuccessful, but there were those that brought about meaningful impacts. For the most part, however, humans had to learn how to live with trolls, because they weren’t going to pack up their bags and go elsewhere. Nope, they were pretty much here to stay.

Issues arose, piled on top of each other as the years went by: imperialism, slavery, racism, and so much more. Given how troll society is bounded by the hemospectrum, it wasn’t a big surprise that humans were placed at the very bottom of that hierarchy.

The turning point came with the arrival of a troll who bled the same candy red color that humans bleed. He preached for things that were unheard amongst his kind, things such as putting a stop to this era of inequality. You can guess how kindly the Empire took to that idea.

He was persecuted, shunned, abandoned by his own race, but he was not entirely alone. He had managed to acquire a small following for himself, one that slowly increased in numbers as it welcomed trolls and humans alike. When it became clear that his voice, along with his followers’ collective voices, weren’t going to be shooshed and papped away, the Empress, Her Imperial Condescension, decided to grant them audience and listen to their pleas once more. That didn’t end well.

A few months after presenting his case to the Empress, there was an assassination attempt on his life. They didn’t get him, but they managed to take down one of his most trusted allies, a human collectively known as ‘Nanna’. She was easily his closest friend. For the longest while, he was something of a pacifist - yet another trait that separated him from his violent race - so the last thing he wanted was to start a war. However, he could no longer ignore the fact that they were going nowhere fast if they kept that up. With the addition of the Empress as the one who ordered for his death in the first place, it was almost a no-brainer.

This led to what was perhaps the biggest, albeit shortest war the world has seen up to date, and it would be later known as The Sufferer’s Movement, named after what his followers had started to call him.

The Sufferer and Her Imperious Condescension came to a stalemate after a small portion of The Imperial City was all but destroyed. The Sufferer was strong-armed into a truce, largely because any more fighting would result in such a pyrrhic victory that society may well not recover. Negotiations were arranged and agreed upon, but the post-war reparations still led to an almost-complete economic collapse that can be likened to the Great Depression.

Now we’re at the current timeframe of the story. The Empire is still recovering from that economic collapse, but there’s a definite change in troll-and-human relations. The Sufferer and his closest followers have largely gone into hiding, but there is a large remnant faction of rebel activity. They engage in guerilla tactics, striking at the Condesce and the hemospectrum in any way they can; the Imperial military has, as a result, inflated.

The hemospectrum was still upheld, but lowblooded trolls were less likely to consider humans as beneath them. There were more opportunities for humans than ever before, at least in the lower districts, and that alone was good enough for most. The few humans who ascended to higher tiers also had a better chance of not being outright shunned (or murdered), largely due to the aforementioned treaties, though many of the provisions that the Condesce agreed to were only ceremonial.

[MISCELLANEOUS STUFF]

After the movement, hemospectrum polarization (amongst trolls only; humans were largely excluded) became infinitely worse. The lower levels are plagued by slavers in search of psionics, and low- and midbloods often find themselves out of work or being outright extorted just because they exist. Cruelty and fear-mongering are at an all time high, and this drives even some lowbloods to bear some bitterness towards the Sufferer.

Magic is a thing in this universe. Trolls don’t have it, since they possess psionics and their biotechnology (from robotic limbs to husktops), but humans are occasionally born with some innate talent for it. They are, naturally, shunned by trolls and humankind alike, though the Imperial government is eager to discover a use for them like they have for psionics. Other humans are duly wary of them after their experiences with trolls and their psychic powers.

The industrial revolution, for the most part, is still underway; that is, it hasn’t caught on with the rest of the world yet - just in this particular area of the world (most likely the equivalent of Europe, to keep things simple).

Also Grandpa Harley fought in the war. Can you just picture Grandpa piloting one of those clockwork airplanes? DOGFIGHTS IN THE AIR — I mean.

One of agreements that was laid out after the war was that humans would share their technological innovations with the Empire, so that is one of the major reasons why the Empire was slowly becoming industrialized. Clockwork and steam tech are both very in fashion right now, and are even incorporated into clothing!

Also a note: Trolls were more advanced by a long shot (ie. spaceships), but used largely organic technology, relying on living things (grubs, etc), so the innovation lies with the fact that technology is something that can no longer be squished and considered obsolete, but easily repairable and replaceable. While the technology was available, such as Equius’s robotics, it was considered more of a secondary tech than anything worth respecting.
